Jozef Murgas (1864-1929)
Jozef Murgas was an inventor, painter, architect, botanist, patriot, and Roman Catholic priest. He helped created wireless telegraphy and contributed in developing mobile communications and wireless transmission. Murgas was born in Slovakia, in the kingdom of Hungary. He attended grammar school in Tajov and high school in Banská Bystrica. While there he attended the painting studio of Jozef Božetech Klemens who noticed his talent and also introduced him to Dominik Skutecký. When his parents had no money to fund his research, he then became a priest.
Jozef was born on February 17, 1864 and he died May 11, 1929 at the age of 65. Murgas emigrated in April 1896. It was due to his strong patriotism he exhibited during his visit of the bishop during holidays in 1893 that he was not allowed to finish his painting studies and had to work as a curate at changing locations in the Kingdom of Hungary. He created a sacral painting at each of these churches. Besides his numerous communal activities in 1898 he started to deal with natural sciences again, especially electrotechnology. Jozef’s article "Telegrafovanie bez drôtu" in Tovaryšstvo magazine of 1900 shows that his radiotelegraphy studies achieved a high level.
