Dennis Ritchie (1941 - 2011)
Dennis Ritchie was born in Bronxville, New York, September 9, 1941. He graduated from Harvard University with degrees in physics and mathematics. Mr. Ritchie worked at the computer center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and became more interested in computing than math. He was recruited by the Sandia National Laboratories, which conducted weapons research and testing. Mr. Ritchie joined Bell Labs in 1967, and began collaboration with Mr. Thompson on both Unix and the C programming language.
Dennis created the C programming language and the UNIX operating system which are both necessary for every computer to work. The C programing writes all of the software to make digital devices and networks operate. “C was designed for systems programmers who wanted to get the fastest performance from operating systems, compilers and other programs.” While the UNIX operating system runs on a large range of other types of computing systems. “Unix was designed mainly to let the growing ranks of professional programmers work more productively.” He died on October 12, 2011.
