Eli WHitney (1765-1825)
In the year of 1765, in Westboro Massachusetts, Eli Whitney was born into a farm but was exposed to lots of machines and manufacturing businesses. Around the year of 1790, Eli’s interest in slavery and hard work grew, he realized he wanted to do something about the work they had to do. In 1790, Whitney invented the cotton gin, the cotton gin was made to shrink down the amount of time it took to make cotton because it originally took hours.
By the mid-1800’s cotton production had risen by a stratospheric amount from the previous century. In 1789, Whitney promised to manufacture 10,000 rifles within a two-year period of time, and the government accepted his bid in 1789. Then, in 1808, Whitney constructed a group of workers residences that would come to be known as Whitneyville, Connecticut. Then again in 1808, He instituted a series of ethical guidelines meant to promote harmonious employee-employer relations, with roots in Puritanical beliefs. In 1817, Eli finally wed Henrietta Edwards, and had a son whose name was Eli Whitney Jr. Eli Whitney Jr. continued working on his manufacturing business as an adult and the elder Eli Whitney Jr. died on January 8,1825 in New Haven, Connecticut.
