Emile Berliner (1851-1929)
Emile Berliner was born on May 20, 1851 in Hanover, Germany. He was one of the 13 children born to Samuel and Sarah Friedman Berliner. Emilie went to school in Hanover and soon graduated in 1865 at the age of 14. This was the end of his formal schooling. Instead of going to school he would go work to support his family, he worked as a clerk in stores. He soon moved to Washington D.C where he continued to work on as a clerk in local stores. In 1873 he decided that a better opportunity awaited him in New York City. He continued to work and started to try to improve himself, so he started studying at night at the Cooper Institute. Emile finally decided to work as a clean up man in the laboratory of Constantine. Working in this laboratory sparked his interest in science.
In 1826 Emilie went back to work as a clerk in washington D.C. The telephone was soon made. Berliner studied it for months and soon found out the telephones weakness is its transmitter. He continued to study the telephone. Working alone in his home he created and new type of transmitter. It was called a “Loose-Contact” transmitter. It was a type microphone and it increased the volume of the transmitted voices. For the next 7 years Emile Berliner was employed by the ABT CO.,where he worked on numerous problems with telephones.
Later on in 1883 while Emile was working for the telephone company he invented a type of floor covering which he termed Parquet Carpet. He started to attend operas, plays, and lectures. He realized that many of these places where these events were held have very poor acoustics. He then came up with solution to for these places with poor acoustics. He invented Acoustic Tiles. They were made of cement. They were hard and heavy, and yet they have the resonance of wood when it was vibrated by by a turning fork. These Acoustic tiles were highly successful. In 1907 Berliner had became fantasized with the possibility of flying machines. This led to him working with the helicopter. He designed the lightweight internal combustion engine to power the rotors. His son Henry continued this for him.
