Steve Jobs (1955 - 2011)
On October 24, 1955 a child named Steven Paul Jobs was born, someone who would eventually revolutionize technology forever. His biological parents, Joanne Schieble and Abdulfattah “John” Jandali, kept him unnamed and put him up for adoption. Shortly after he was put up for adoption, Clara and Paul Jobs adopted him and were the ones to name him Steven Paul Jobs. In his childhood years, he worked with his father by putting together and taking apart electronics. When he was 16 (1971), he met Steve Wozniak, the person who would help Jobs co-founded Apple. In 1972, Jobs began taking classes at Reed college and dropped out after only 6 months and two years later, in 1974, he began working for Atari and eventually left to go to India. In 1976, he began making the first Apple Computer and eventually showed it off at the Personal Computing Festival. Jobs went on to produce several more Apple Computers simply titled Apple II and Apple III. In 1986, Jobs bought the computer section of a company called Industrial Light and Magic from George Lucas and renamed it Pixar. Pixar released the first computer-animated short-film called Luxo Jr. and became one of the most valuable companies in film animation when they signed a deal with Disney in May of 1991. In February of 1995, Jobs became the CEO and President of Pixar and released the first full-length Pixar movie, Toy Story, in November of the same year.
In December of 1996, Apple bought an Indian retail company called NeXT for $400 million. In 1998, Apple unveiled the first iMac at Flint Center in Cupertino, California and the following year the Power Mac G3 and the colored iMacs at Macworld. In 2000, Jobs officially becomes the CEO of Apple and the Mac G4 Cube is unveiled. Over the years Apple unveils several other versions of the Mac and software updates and one of the most used applications or online stores ever, iTunes. Pixar releases movies such as Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2. In 2003, Jobs is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but continues to work and unveils the iPod Mini the following year as well as having his tumor removed. 2005 and 2006 were perhaps one of Apple’s most successful years because of the release of iPod shuffle, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, iPod videos, iTunes movie store, Motorola ROCKR, Intel Macs, the iMac, the Macbook Pro,the iPod hi-fi, and the Mac Pro. Apple’s success continued into January of 2007 because of the introduction of the first iPhone and it continued it’s success on other generations, especially the iPhone 5S which is the top-selling iPhone. In 2009, Jobs health condition continuously got worse and he received a liver transplant later that year. In 2010, the iPad was released and he made his last public appearance in June of the following year at the Cupertino City Council. In August of 2011, Jobs resigned his position as CEO of Apple because of his pancreatic cancer had come back with a vengeance and eventually died on October 5, 2011. Although he is no longer with us, Steve Jobs’ legacy will continue to live through his revolutionary work with Pixar and Apple.
