Hans LipperShey (1570-1619)
Hans Lippershey was born in the 1570 in Wesel, Germany. Little is known about his childhood, but he eventually moved to Middelburg, Netherlands where he got married in 1594, and became a Dutch citizen in 1602. In the city of Middelburg Lippershey, he practiced his spectacle-making, which resulted in Lippershey creating one of the first telescope. It is unclear if Lippershey made the first telescope since many Individuals claimed to have created the first telescope, but Lippershey was the first to get his telescope patented. The government gave Lippershey a large reward of money to reproduce his telescopes.
Lippershey named his telescope “Kijker” (looker). Lippershey's telescope had a circular eyepiece aligned with a convex objective lens. There are many stories about Lippershey’s telescope, one story goes that he got the idea for his design after observing two children in his shop holding up two lenses that made a distant appear close. Others charged at the time that he stole the design from another eyeglass maker, Zacharias Jansen. Lippershey Died September 1619 in Middelburg, Netherlands.
