Thomas Savery (1650-1715)
Thomas Savery was born a member of a well known family. He was well educated, and became a military engineer. He constructed a clock that still is in his family. He invented and patented an arrangement an arrangement of paddlewheels, driven by capstan in calm weather. He had no success with this invention. Savery soon fitted his apparatus into a small vessel into one of the vessels of the paddlewheel. This made the paddlewheel faster and stronger, but it was never introduced to the Navy. It was after this invention when Savery became the inventor of a steam engine.
There were no engines before the steam engine, there where only water wheels. The steam engine was a huge success. The steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. The steam engine cost more to use because in order to get it to work you needed to burn coal. The steam engines were really dirty, but they got things done faster than the water wheel. This changed the way people lived and did work.
